Engineered hardwood built for our humidity swings

Engineered hardwood is real wood on top of a dimensionally stable plywood core. It looks identical to solid hardwood underfoot but won't cup, gap, or buckle when the seasons change - and around Rockford, they change a lot, from bone-dry winter heat to a genuinely humid Rock River Valley summer. That makes engineered the right pick for basements, slab-on-grade homes, kitchens, and rooms with radiant heating.

Flooring Trends stocks engineered hardwood from several major mills, brought in and installed by our own employees - the people who measure your rooms are the same people on their knees installing it.

Why homeowners choose engineered

Engineered hardwood gives you most of the beauty of solid wood without the climate sensitivity, which is exactly why so many Rockford basements end up with it.

  • Stable on concrete slabs and over radiant heat
  • Available in wider planks (up to 9") that solid wood can't deliver
  • Pre-finished from the factory with aluminum-oxide topcoats
  • Floating, glue-down, or nail-down installation - whatever your subfloor needs
  • Refinishable once or twice depending on wear-layer thickness

Species, widths, and finishes

Most engineered hardwood is made from European or American oak, but you can also get maple, walnut, hickory, and exotic species. Plank widths run from a classic 3" up to designer 9"-wide boards. Finishes range from clear matte to wire-brushed, hand-scraped, fumed, and reactive-stained European looks - we'll bring sample boards to your home so you can compare them side by side, the same process we use on our [solid hardwood](/real-solid-hardwood-flooring) jobs.

Installation, from our crew to your floor

Our installers assess your subfloor first - moisture testing on concrete, joist inspection on plywood, flatness gauges everywhere. We then recommend floating, glue-down, or nail-down based on what will actually perform best in your home, not what's fastest for us. Every quote includes baseboard removal/reinstall, transitions to adjacent rooms, and full disposal of your existing floor. Engineered Hardwood - frequently asked questions

Yes - if the wear layer is 3mm or thicker, it can be sanded and refinished once or twice. Thinner wear layers (1-2mm) should be screened and recoated rather than fully sanded.

Water-resistant, not waterproof. It tolerates the occasional spill far better than solid wood, but standing water from a dishwasher leak or burst pipe should still be cleaned up promptly.

Yes - this is one of engineered hardwood's biggest advantages. We follow manufacturer guidelines on subfloor temperature and acclimation to prevent gapping.

Floating is faster and easier to repair. Glue-down feels more solid underfoot and is quieter. Over concrete we typically recommend glue-down; over plywood, either works. Read more about how Rockford customers rate the finished result in our [reviews](/reviews).
